Cheryl Van Ackeren

Biography

Attorney Cheryl Van Ackeren brings a rare blend of strength, compassion, and real-world experience to her family law practice. As a U.S. Army veteran who served 15 months in Iraq with the 1st Cavalry Division, Cheryl knows what it means to fight through difficult circumstances—and to stand strong for those who need someone in their corner.

A combat-related injury ended her dream of becoming a JAG officer, but it didn’t end her commitment to serving others. Cheryl shifted course with purpose, earning her law degree from Seattle University and dedicating her career to helping families navigate some of life’s most difficult moments.

Before joining Lutz & Associates, Cheryl owned her own successful family law and military practice for over a decade. That experience reflects what we value in our attorneys: proven leadership, deep legal knowledge, and an unwavering commitment to client care. Whether she’s negotiating a parenting plan or litigating a complex custody dispute, Cheryl brings steady guidance and a strategic mindset to every case she handles.

Now, she focuses on the practice areas that allow these families to move forward:

  • Divorce and legal separation
  • Parenting plans and modifications
  • Child custody and visitation
  • Asset division (including military pension) and spousal maintenance

Her legal foundation was built at Swift & McDonald, a firm focused on military and family law.

Cheryl also worked with the Northwest Justice Project’s Veterans Division, where she provided legal support to unhoused and at-risk veterans dealing with housing, healthcare access, and benefits.

Clients appreciate Cheryl’s ability to listen without judgment, explain legal options clearly, and develop strategies that protect what matters most: their children, their future, and their peace of mind.

Outside the office, Cheryl is a proud mother of two and finds joy in horseback riding, snowboarding, and camping across the Pacific Northwest. Her adventurous spirit and commitment to her community mirror the energy she brings to her clients every day.
